About
The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Selangor Branch was founded on 27 June 1953 to serve local members and organise nature activities. Today, it welcomes nature lovers from across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and beyond — including Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, and surrounding areas.
The branch is managed by an elected branch committee, comprising members, and supported by wonderful Special Interest Groups (SIGs) because nature is more fun together.
Our parent society MNS, founded in 1940, is Malaysia's oldest independent, non-profit environmental organisation. It began as a gathering of nature enthusiasts — many of them British colonial residents at the time — who loved exploring the wild, observing wildlife, and recording their findings in the Malayan Nature Journal. Over the years, that shared love for nature grew into a lasting commitment to protect it.
Today, we remain a community of people who simply love being outdoors — watching birds, walking through forests, and learning about plants, fungi, herps, and everything in between.
What do we do?
We organise trips, talks, and workshops, and respond to conservation and advocacy issues when needed.
Our goal is simple: Know nature, value nature, and act for nature.
While our Special Interest Groups (SIGs) operate independently and report to the Branch monthly, the Branch Committee focuses on the annual Open Day, branch trips, and talks. These activities are run entirely by volunteers and depend on the time and capacity of Committee members.
When resources allow, we also organise Climate Action Kids Engagement (CAKE) family field trips with selected SIGs. We also run Wild Wonders programmes, which offer opportunities to explore Malaysia's biodiversity and learn from conservationists, researchers, art practitioners and indigenous communities beyond the scope of our existing SIGs.
Conservation & Advocacy
Beyond our core calendar, we care about protecting our environment. Because we are volunteer-run, we support local advocacy and conservation efforts on a strictly ad-hoc basis—stepping up only when critical local issues arise and committee time allows.
