Report: Pathfinders' Roping Course

Member's Report
by Jimmy Chew

Full turnout for both days (14th and 21st January 2024) for the six participants at Bukit Kiara for theory and warm-up practicals, and Bukit Dinding on a suitably identified steep slope, along Kazumi Trail for the second day of the course.

All learnt various essential knots, hitches and bends - from simple overhand knot to figure 8 to bowline, to water knot and many more till coiling as part of rope management. Understanding types of ropes and carabiners formed the theories and practical includes fear management with sufficient practice before the real action (assisted belay, self-belay) happens. Both days took about six hours each.

The course contents were jointly developed by Jimmy Chew, Pathfinders Coordinator with Corezone's Leong Dee Lu which aimed at the minimum but important techniques so that students can capture (instead of a wide range of techniques and requiring the use of many tools).

This roping course is not a full climbing course that require more training hours and usage of various devices but sufficient to equip the hiker with the knowledge and skills to deploy ropes with or without an additional carabiner for self-belay or assisting to belay others especially when steep slopes are present and/or when the slopes are slippery due to rain. A certificate of attendance was given to all participants.
