๐ฟ Wild Wonders is at Kg Orang Asli Busut Baru, Kuala Langat!
Join MNS Selangor Branch & Flora Special Interest Group with the Kg Busut Baru team and award-winning Temuan artist-activist Shaq Koyok.
This experience is designed for parents with children ages 9–18 to discover nature, culture and creativity together.
๐ณ Guided Forest Walk Step into the Kuala Langat North Peat Swamp Forest Reserve with Temuan guides Panglima Gang and Shaq Koyok for a 1.5 to 2-hour walk. You’ll discover giant trees, hidden plants, and a chance to see wildlife — perhaps you will come across the Malayan tapir and Malayan sun bear or see the squirrel so tiny it can glide, found only here in Selangor.
The guides will share stories and forest secrets, showing how their community has lived in balance with the land for generations. It’s like stepping into a living, breathing nature classroom.
๐งบ Temuan Handicraft After the walk, and a short break, discover the beauty of Temuan artistry. Ask weavers about their unique handmade items that reflect both centuries-old traditions and modern creativity. Each piece tells a story of connection to the forest and community.
๐ฒ Traditional Temuan Lunch Meander into the outdoor kitchen to see what's cooking. Then sit down for a family-friendly meal prepared by six Temuan women. Dishes feature herbs and ingredients gathered from the forest, river and orchards — think chicken, vegetables and eggs cooked with wild herbs, and seasonal fruit. Meals are prepared mild (non-spicy) with condiments on the side for adventurous tastebuds. No pork will be served, though the kitchen is not halal.
๐จ Meet-and-greet & create art with Shaq Koyok In the afternoon, join Shaq Koyok as he guides you through an art activity inspired by nature and culture, helping families create their own piece to bring home.
Shaq Koyok is from the Temuan Orang Asli tribe in Banting, southwest Selangor. Known for blending art and activism, his work raises awareness about indigenous issues in Malaysia.
He attended Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Cheding primary school and later boarding school at SMK Telok Datok, Banting, before earning a Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam. Since graduating in 2009, he has exhibited his artwork in galleries both in Malaysia and internationally. In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious Merdeka Award Grant.
Shaq’s fondest memories are fishing in the nearby peat swamp and hunting small animals in the jungle. In primary school, he discovered a passion for art that shaped his life. When land developers encroached on the jungle around his village, that childhood trauma fueled his passion to fight for his people’s land rights. For many years, he has been commonly seen at protests, standing shoulder to shoulder with activists to demand equal rights for Orang Asli folk.
Through his art, he frequently expresses the plight of indigenous communities scattered across Malaysia. His bold brush strokes capture gorgeous portraits of everyday Orang Asli people, telling powerful stories that cling tightly to the canvas he paints on.
๐จ๐ฉ๐ง๐ฆ A perfect family experience for parents who want their children to connect with the forest, Indigenous culture and creativity — all in one day.
