Report: Introduction to Birdwatching at Taman Tasik Permaisuri (CAKE16)

On 4 April 2026, we welcomed MNS family members Xavier and his father, Terence, to an Introduction to Birdwatching (CAKE16) field trip. Organised by the MNS Selangor Branch in collaboration with its Bird Group, this Climate Action Kids Engagement (CAKE) field trip took place at the scenic Permaisuri Lake Garden, with the lake's heronry as the highlight.

CAKE introduces children aged 7 to 17, along with their parents, to nature-based activities. It also raises awareness about how climate change affects wildlife and habitats, while showing children simple actions they can take to help protect them.

The morning began with a briefing on birdwatching etiquette and the use of binoculars, followed by a 0.4 km walk around the lake. Having participated in earlier CAKE bird identification activities (e.g. TTDI, FRIM), 9-year-old Xavier confidently described birds observed through his binoculars and the spotting scope.

During the walk, we introduced bird counting techniques. Xavier performed exceptionally well, accurately counting 46 Rock Pigeons (Columba livia) on a grassy slope beside the lake.

The heronry was especially active. Painted Storks (Mycteria leucocephala) flew overhead carrying nesting materials, while Little Egrets (Egretta garzetta). displayed their breeding plumage. Through the scope, we also observed two juvenile Black-crowned Night Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) in their nest, with their parents nearby.

After a short snack break, the session turned to climate awareness. Xavier shared his understanding of climate change, while Hon Yuen discussed its impact on birds, with Lai Wah contributing additional insights to the discussion.

This was followed by a hands-on activity where Xavier designed a bird-friendly garden using air clay. After sketching his ideas and selecting colours, we moved into the shelter due to the rising heat, where he completed his creative piece—adding drawings of birds, including one with a melodious tune.

The session concluded with a review of the morning’s observations. While Xavier read his bird observations out, Lai Wah compiled the final tally: 14 species recorded, with the highest count being 82 Black-crowned Night Herons. 

As this marked our final birdwatching introduction session for children aged 9–12 this year, we hope Xavier and his parents will continue their journey with the MNS Selangor Branch Bird Group, fostering a lasting appreciation for birds and their conservation.
